Health Literacy & Immunizations

Did you know October is health literacy month? Health literacy is the ability to find and understand information about your health. It’s important to have trusted sources to go to when you have questions about your healthcare.

One of the best sources for healthcare information would be your primary care doctor. There are also some online resources that share verified information about health, such as the CDC or Mayo Clinic. Your local health department can also be a reliable source.

As flu season approaches, COVID-19 cases begin to increase, and the newest COVID-19 booster becomes available, you may encounter unreliable information about vaccines. Vaccines are one of the safest medications available, and undergo rigorous testing and surveillance. Immunize.org is a nonprofit that focuses on providing information about immunizations to both professionals and patients, and can also recommend other reputable sources.

Locally, here in Cortland our Department of Health has begun the Community Immunization Ambassadors program, with volunteers who are “trained to have non-judgmental conversations with other community members about their vaccine concerns and provide information, if needed.” If you are interested in working with the Community Immunization Ambassadors, contact Alanna Powell at apowell@cortland-co.org.

You may have people in your life who are hesitant about vaccinations - they could be clients or loved ones. Encourage them to use reputable healthcare sources and to speak to their physicians about their concerns. Depending on your comfort level, you can also start a conversation with them about vaccines.
