Winter Safety

As we experience an increase in snow storms so quintessential to Central NY, many folks are familiar with preparing their cars and homes for the winter weather. There are also many folks ready to take the opportunity to grab their skis, skates, and snowboards, but did you know that as many as 50% of sports-related concussions occur during winter sports? Winter weather-related injuries and deaths are more common than you may realize. Here are some tips on keeping yourself safe this winter:

·     Many slips and falls occur during winter. Be extra careful when walking over cold ground, even if you don’t see any ice, as “black ice” or clear ice may be present.

·     It can be risky to exercise in cold weather just as it is in hot weather. You may have less endurance in the cold and muscles are prone to injury; be sure to stretch beforehand, know your limits and don’t overexert.

·     Extreme cold can increase your risk of a heart attack, as well as hypothermia and frostbite. Exercise - including things like shoveling snow or doing yard work - raises your body temperature, but it can rapidly drop again when you stop.  Dress in warm layers and don’t remain outside in dangerous weather (e.g. storms and high winds).

·     When participating in winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey, be sure to have a buddy with you in case you’re injured or need help. Wear safety equipment such as helmets, knee pads, and dress warm enough for the cold at the top of the summit.

There are also two warming centers in Cortland for those who need shelter from the cold.
